The Thing No One Told Me About Gym Ownership

What I was never told about becoming a gym owner.

Being a gym owner is a wonderful life to live. You get to help coaches create careers helping people. Every day you have a product that you know is changing someone’s life.

Not everyone get’s to say that and it is truly a blessing to get to do so.

That being said, if you asked me 7 years ago what I thought being a gym owner was. It would have looked a lot different.

7 years ago I was training to become a CrossFit Games Athlete, working out 3 hours per day. The rest of the day was spent preparing the programming for the gym I was going to open, reading books by other people who have opened gyms, and listening to the Jason Khalipa podcast.

I thought I was gonna crush it. Every day was gonna be working out with Katelyn and we would build this place that everyone would want to come to.

Then we went the first year without making a profit and I admitted I needed I didn’t know what I needed to, to be successful in this. I hired a business coach named Brooks and I learned that:

1) How I spend my time is incredibly important. If I spend it working out and recovering, I’ll get better at CrossFit. If I spend it hanging out with Katelyn, I’ll have a better relationship. If I spend it working on my business, I’ll have a better business.

2) That the person I am today is not the person that I am going to be when I get to the destination I have set out.

Go to today, my day starts with a workout at the 6a, breakfast with the family at 7:30a, then coaching/working on the gym/mentoring coaches until 5p, then family time.

Did I make the CrossFit Games? No. Am I still very fit? Yup. Do I have a beautiful family? Indeed. Do I have a business that helps people? Absolutely.

I bring this up because right now you have a fitness goal or maybe your friend does. And we all think the goal is Today+. You’ll be you, but with this one thing you really want attached to your tool belt of life.

When, in reality, in order to get to any goal it takes consistent habits that will change who you are. You’ll have to dedicate time to it and give up time elsewhere.

It’s why we ask you your “Why?” When you get here. You have to want the changes to your life that come with the result you’re changing. Otherwise, you won’t stick with the process and not achieve your goal.

So, what are you putting in your schedule right now to work on your goals? If you are having success, let me know! If you’re having trouble sticking with your habits, email me and I’d love to help!
