Most of us know we should walk more, but knowing it and actually doing it are two very different things.
Whether you’re looking to clear your head, get some extra movement in, or simply enjoy a little time outside, walking is one of the easiest things you can do for your health. With that in mind, I wanted to share some of my favorite places to walk around Houston.
The first one might surprise you.
Are ya ready?
Here we go…
1. Right Outside Your Front Door
Why I Like It:
Walk outside your house or apartment, set a 15-minute timer on your phone, and start walking. When the timer goes off, turn around and walk back.
That’s it.
No driving. No traffic. No planning required. Unless the weather is terrible, there’s very little standing between you and getting a walk in.
Before I share the rest of my favorite spots, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that walking really can be that simple.
2. Hermann Park
Why I Like It:
Hermann Park is the closest park to the gym, making it a convenient option for many Vegvisir athletes. The park features well-maintained, shaded trails, and as an added bonus, there are plenty of ducks to admire along the way.
3. Memorial Park
Why I Like It:
Most people think of the large jogging loop, but I’m actually talking about the wilderness trails near the Arboretum side of the park. Within just a few minutes, you can feel like you’ve left the city entirely without ever leaving the Inner Loop.
We often take the boys there to spot bugs, snakes, and other wildlife. The trails also tend to be surprisingly mosquito-free, thanks in part to the abundance of beautyberry plants.
4. Brazos Bend State Park
Why I Like It:
While it’s about a 40-minute drive from the gym, it’s absolutely worth the trip when Houston isn’t operating in “Oven Mode.”
The wildlife is incredible. We’ve seen armadillos, alligators, snakes, turtles, countless birds, and plenty of fascinating insects. It’s one of the best places around to enjoy nature while getting your steps in.
5. The Galleria
Why I Like It:
When the weather doesn’t cooperate, The Galleria is a fantastic indoor option. With multiple levels and endless corridors, you can rack up a surprising number of steps without ever stepping outside.
Plus, there’s a LEGO Store.
The Ellis family considers that a major bonus.
Pro Tip: Try to go on a weekday if possible. Saturdays, and Sundays after 11 a.m., can get pretty crowded.
So, if you’re looking for a few new places to stretch your legs and get some extra movement in, hopefully one of these spots makes your list.
Happy walking, y’all, and I’ll see you in the gym!
