The Battle Between Old Priorities and New Values

The challenge you face now is strengthening the belief that your health deserves your time and attention. That value, taking care of your body through nutritious food and daily movement, can only be built through personal experience. The more benefits you experience firsthand, the stronger that value becomes.

The problem the holiday season presents:

As you enter the holidays, you’re about to face competing priorities that have been reinforced in your life for years.

  • Family is important.
  • Work is important.

The belief that you are important, and that your well-being deserves the same consideration as those other responsibilities, may be a much newer value. Unlike family and work, it isn’t yet supported by years of experiences and habits. As a result, it’s often the first thing we sacrifice when life gets busy.

The solution:

If prioritizing your health is still a new habit, I encourage you to commit to doing one thing for your personal well-being every day until the end of the year. It can be physical, mental, or emotional.

Set a reminder on your phone. Block out time on your calendar. Let your family know that 7:00-7:30 p.m. is your time. Whatever it takes, schedule it first and make it the last thing you give up.

Even if it’s only 10 minutes on a particular day, choose something that benefits both the person you are today and the person you’re becoming tomorrow.

When you make it through the holiday season having completed those 36 workouts, stretched for 70 minutes each week, taken those daily walks, or achieved whatever goals you set for yourself, you’ll have accumulated more than 90 experiences between now and January 1 that prove to your brain that this value deserves a place alongside the others.

Be the rolling stone that gathers no moss during these final months of the year. Remember: the experiences you choose to have shape the beliefs you carry forward.

Have a wonderful day, y’all. I’ll see you in the gym.
