The challenge this month is to walk as many steps as possible with the goal of hitting 310,000 steps by the end of the month (10,000/day on average).
Well, today I wanted to share some of my favorite walking spots in Houston.
The first one will shock you.
Are ya ready?
Here we go…
1) Walk outside the door to your house/apartment, set a 15 minute timer on your phone and just start walking in a direction. When the timer goes off, start walking back.
Why I Like It: No frills. It’s easy. You can’t blame traffic. The only thing stopping you is bad weather if you don’t live in an apartment building.
The rest of these locations. I just would be remised if I didn’t point out that going for a walk is that easy.
2) Hermann Park
Why I Like It: It is the closest park to the gym, which means that for the majority of Vegvisir Atheltes it is also convenient. On top of that, there are well shaded and manicured trails for the majority of the park and you can see cute ducks.
3) Memorial Park
Why I Like It: While there is the big jogging loop, I’m more talking about the wilderness trails located near the arboretum side of the park. After about a 5 minute walk you can find yourself in a completely different world without leaving the inner loop. We take the boys there to spot bugs, snakes, and enjoy the relatively mosquitoeless walks in the woods thanks to all the Beautyberries.
4) Bayou Bend State Park
Why I Like it: While it is a 40 minute drive from the gym, it is definitely worth the effort to go out and see all the cool Texas wildlife when the weather isn’t set to “Oven Mode.” We have seen armadillos, alligators, snakes, tons of birds, turtles, and tons of interesting little bugs.
5) The Galleria Mall
Why I Like It: If it rains, there is a huge expansive 2-4 story mall (depending on the part of the mall you’re in) that you can rack up miles and miles of walking without needing to go outside. Plus, there’s a Lego store. Ellises love Lego stores.
Pro Tip: Do this literally any day other than Saturday (and Sunday after 11am).
So, if you’re looking for more opportunities to walk, hopefully I have presented you with a few!
Happy walking y’all and see you in the gym,
