Let’s Play The WHY Game.

Has a child in your life ever asked you “WHY?!” So much that you had a migraine?

Well, I’m about to use that game to help you set a goal (and if you’re a Vegvisir Athelte, I’ve already done this to you when you came in).

The difference in this game and the one that child was playing is that their goal was to annoy, my goal is to help/make you cry.

The First Why:

“Why Are You Here? What brought you to Vegvisir?”

Chances are your goals coming into Vegvisir were surface level and vague. Which is totally fair! You don’t know me. I don’t know you. Us Americans keep things REALLY close to the vest (especially in Texas).

Most Common Response I Get?

“I Just Wanna Get Toned.”

Not a good enough answer for me though, so we dig.

The Second Why:

“Why do you want to get toned?”

Often that surface goal is vague. It’s a defense mechanism that means almost nothing to you. You would tell a random person on the street you’re going to get toned. That doesn’t move you off the couch and it certainly isn’t why you’re asking our gym for help.

Most Common Response?

“I want to feel good, look good, and be healthy!”

The answer you think I want to here. Good, but we aren’t here for me.

The Third Why:

“Why do you want to be healthy, feel good, and look good?”

Great, you want to be healthy, look good, and feel good.

Who doesn’t? This definitely is opening up, but it is the way ya open up to a friend at a dinner party. I’m looking for a best friend answer if it is your WHY! So like Stanley Yelnats and Zero, we keep digging.

Most Common Response?

“I mean who doesn’t”

The Fourth Why:

“For sure! Everyone wants to be healthy and look good. Why do YOU want to be healthy and look good?”

This is usually when you say “No Shit Sherlock” in the nicest way possible to me or yourself, not realizing the real game we are playing.

We are here to dig DEEP! We want a hole a mile deep and an inch wide.

We need a core sample from the heart. That’s where this why comes from.

After this one, the responses aren’t common unless it is further push back. From here on out, the whys start to mean something.

The Fifth Why and Beyond:

Chances are the response we got to the fourth why cracked a hole in the armor or sent more defenses up to be broken down later by more whys (if you’re playing the game at home, keep asking why till those defenses come down).

When people open up about their real whys. Their REAL goals, they sound something like this:

“I want to be toned so I can show my partner that I still care.”

“I want to stay under 200lbs because it means I get to be there at my daughters wedding.”

“I want to keep working out so I can stay out of a wheelchair for as long as I can.”

Why’s take honesty. Brutal honesty.

They take raw emotions that need to be heard.

In my experience, when athletes give me that deep why. There isn’t a goal they won’t hit.

So, let me know if you played! I wanna hear your results. Those results only help me help you.
