Starting a fitness journey can feel overwhelming—especially if you’ve never been in a gym before, or it’s been years since you last exercised. The idea of hiring a personal trainer might sound helpful… but also a little scary.
We get it.
At Vegvisir CrossFit & Personal Training in Houston, many of our members are people who originally felt nervous about working out.
Many have been told by their doctor to “start strength training,” but they’ve never been to a gym or didn’t like their previous experiences at a gym.
The good news? You don’t have to have experience to go to a gym and ya definitely don’t need to find start with a personal trainer.
In this post, we’ll help you learn how to find a personal trainer that meets your needs and gets you were you want to be.
🧠What to Look For in a Personal Trainer
Not all trainers are the same.
In the United States, you just need to pass a weekend course and test, then you can legally teach anyone how to workout.
This means there will be a ton of trainers to good from, but deciphering what makes a trainer good for you requires a little digging.
If you’re looking for someone who can help you build strength safely and sustainably, here are the most important things to look for:
✅ 1. Experience with Clients Like You
Look for a trainer who has worked with and successfully helped people your age, with your concerns. For example:
- Joint pain, arthritis, or osteoporosis
- Limited flexibility or mobility
- Previous injuries or surgeries
- General fear of “getting started”
At Vegvisir CrossFit, this is our specialty. We focus on helping beginners—especially busy professionals and our 45+ crowd — build confidence and strength from the ground up. Just check out our reviews here: https://g.co/kgs/gqHWWRF
✅ 2. A Customized Approach
Avoid any trainer who uses a “one-size-fits-all” plan. You’re not a machine—you need workouts tailored to your:
- Current fitness level
- Physical limitations
- Personal goals
- Comfort and pace
Your personal trainer should want to have a conversation with you before accepting money. A mechanic can’t fix your car without looking under the hood and your trainer can’t help you without knowing about you.
✅ 3. A Calm, Friendly, Supportive Personality
You’re trusting someone with your body and your health. The right trainer will:
- Listen more than they talk
- Never shame or judge you
- Make you feel encouraged and capable, not embarrassed or overwhelmed
At the end of the day, you want this person to help you change a habit. You will spend around 3 hours per week with this person, you should feel cared for by them and enjoy their company.
đźš© Warning Signs to Avoid
Unfortunately, not every trainer is a good fit—especially for beginners. Be cautious of:
- Trainers who push you too hard on Day 1 and don’t adjust.
- People who don’t ask about your health history, your goals, and your why.
- Trainers who talk more about appearance than health or function
- They don’t tell you what you need and change their prescription for you just to make a sale.
You deserve to feel safe and welcomed. A trainer’s job is to help you. Trainer’s that get results will ride that fine line between keeping you comfortable and making sure you’re progressing.
If you don’t feel like the person across from you has your best interests at heart, find someone who does.
🤷‍♀️ “What If I’m Nervous to Even Walk in the Door?”
You’re talking about making a big change in your life and going to a place where you don’t feel confident. Of course it is scary and you’re certainly not alone.
A lot of our members tell us the hardest part wasn’t the first workout—it was simply showing up.
But once you walk in, everything gets easier.
That’s why we offer a No Sweat Intro at Vegvisir CrossFit & Personal Training. It’s not a workout. It’s just a friendly conversation where we:
- Learn about your health background and goals
- Talk about your why.
- Answer your questions about strength training
- Show you how our programs work
- Help you feel 100% comfortable before you start
There’s no pressure, no judgment, and no commitment.
