Gym Ownership

Being a gym owner is a wonderful life to live. You get to help coaches build careers helping people, and every day you get to deliver a product that you know is changing someone’s life.

Not everyone gets to say that, and it truly is a blessing.

That said, if you had asked me seven years ago what I thought being a gym owner would look like, my answer would’ve been very different.

Eight years ago I was training to become a CrossFit Games athlete. I was working out three hours a day, and the rest of my time was spent writing programming for the gym I planned to open, reading books from other gym owners, and listening to the Jason Khalipa podcast.

In my mind, we were going to crush it. Every day would start with a workout with Katelyn, and together we’d build a place that everyone would want to come to.

Then our first year passed without making a profit.

That’s when I had to admit something: I didn’t actually know what I needed to know to be successful at running a business.

So I hired a business coach named Brooks, and he helped me realize two important things.

First, how I spend my time determines what improves in my life.

If I spend my time working out and recovering, I’ll get better at CrossFit.
If I spend my time with Katelyn, I’ll build a better relationship.
If I spend my time working on the business, I’ll build a better business.

Second, the person I am today is not the person I will be when I reach the destination I’m aiming for.

Fast forward to today, and my schedule looks a lot different.

My day starts with a workout at the 6 a.m. class. Breakfast with the family is at 7:30. Then it’s coaching, working on the gym, and mentoring coaches until about 5 p.m. After that, it’s family time.

Did I make the CrossFit Games? No.

Am I still very fit? Absolutely.
Do I have a beautiful family? I do.
Do I run a business that helps people every single day? Without a doubt.

I bring this up because right now you probably have a fitness goal—or maybe someone close to you does.

Most of us imagine that reaching a goal means becoming the same person we are today, plus the thing we want. Like it’s just an upgrade we add onto our lives.

But that’s rarely how it works.

Reaching any meaningful goal requires consistent habits that slowly change who you are. It requires dedicating time to something and, often, giving up time somewhere else.

That’s why when someone joins our gym, we always ask about their “why.”

You have to want the changes in your life that come with the result you’re chasing. Otherwise, it becomes very hard to stick with the process long enough to actually get there.

So here’s a question for you:

What are you putting in your schedule right now that moves you toward your goals?

If things are going well, I’d love to hear about it.

And if you’re having trouble sticking with your habits, send me an email. I’d be happy to help however I can.

Have a wonderful day, everyone—and keep pushing toward the future you want.
