Fitness and Nutrition

Of the 5 Pillars of Health, these are the ones that we are the most familiar with. They are either on their own or combined, the reason you came to us.

When we feel unhealthy, these two are the bedrock of any health and wellness plan.

Fitness build the muscle and the nutrition reveals it is probably something you felt was critical to your success in the gym when you started your fitness journey.

But, as you continued on your journey and stayed consistent, you realized that fitness goals can become more like leveling a skill tree in a video game and nutrition just became “what you ate.”

WHAT CHANGED?

Well, let’s define what peak success in these two pillars is and maybe we will reveal why your idea of success in Fitness and Nutrition changed during your time here at Vegvisir.

FITNESS

The most fun part of all these pillars. You get to lift heavy circles, build muscles, and impress your friends.

While there are moments you wish that the programmer would get kicked hard in the shins by a trailer hitch, you love the results of what your hard work provides.

At the end of the day, that programmer is chasing this goal:

Making your body an asset for what all of life will throw at you.

At the end of our lives lies a day where our bodies will one day become a liability. We call the time from today to that day our “health span.”

Working on your ability to lift weights external to you, move your body through space at will, and keeping your cardiovascular system primed will give you autonomy for as long as possible. The time spent here will have you being thankful time and time again. From the hike up a tall mountain, to being able to carry your children around New York City all day, to being able to sit on the beach with your partner as you enjoy retirement.

The pinnacle of fitness doesn’t mean you are always striving to be the fastest, strongest, or most mobile person in the room. The pinnacle has an objective baseline and subjective points of success beyond that.

If you can deadlift your body weight, fall down and get up without pain, reach full range of motion in the overhead squat, go on a 3 mile hike without getting winded, and get active in some way that you enjoy each day, you’re absolutely crushing this pillar.

NUTRITION

This is the other part of health that people love to talk about and is the most misunderstood.

Nutrition is how we fuel ourselves with the food we eat.

Ideally we eat enough to sustain a healthy body weight for ourselves and support the exercise that we do.

Our bodies are a complex ecosystem of cells that have different needs and the frustrating part is that each body is going to have slightly different needs which makes a journey into nutrition frustrating for many as we search for the right diet for us to help us build the body weight are looking for.

An important thing to remember here is that, like with all pillars, the only things we ever have full control of in our life is our effort and our attitude. Genetics, finances, lunch options, whether your favorite TV show gets renewed, can all fall out of our control or are never in our control to begin with.

Building the pinnacle for nutrition for each person is different and basing the outcomes of our efforts here on what other people look like is one of the most defeating things I have ever seen.

To find true virtuosity in nutrition you need to approach each choice you make with the EFFORT of someone who wants to make a change and an ATTITUDE of acceptance for what are able to work with in that moment. 

To make that effort, you just need to make choices that have you eating foods that you can find in nature, eat as much vegetables as you can, go for leaner meats, limit added sugar, and eat until full. Once you do that, you just have to adjust ratios and overall quantities of these foods to get to a target goal.
