5 Simple Food Tips to Save Time and Stay on Track

To help you create more time for the fun stuff this season, I’ve got a few simple nutrition tips for you this month.

The best part? These strategies save time and help keep you moving toward your goals.

1. Batch Cook

No one wants to spend hours in the kitchen—especially when the park, the beach, or time outside is calling.

Batch cooking is a simple solution: cook a larger amount of food at once so you have multiple meals ready to go.

Eat one portion that day, then store the rest in the fridge or freezer for later.

For example:
Make a large salad and cook twice the number of chicken breasts you need. Enjoy some for dinner, then pack the rest away and you’ve already got tomorrow’s lunch or dinner handled.

A little extra effort once can save you a lot of time later.

2. Chop a Pile of Veggies and Fruit

It’s easy to reach for processed snacks because they’re quick, convenient, and ready to eat.

You can create that same convenience with healthier options.

Take about 20 minutes and chop up some vegetables like:

  • Cucumbers
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Peppers
  • Tomatoes

Store them in a container so they’re ready whenever hunger strikes.

Then do the same thing with fruit—pineapple, watermelon, melon, cantaloupe, or whatever you enjoy.

Now you’ve got healthy, ready-to-go snacks waiting for you.

Pro tip: Try to reach for veggies first and aim to eat more veggies than fruit overall.

3. Plan Ahead

The sun is shining, the birds are singing… and your fridge is empty.

Grocery shopping is the last thing most people want to do on a beautiful day.

Instead, check the weather and plan your grocery trips on rainy or slower days. Create a simple meal plan so you can buy everything you need in one trip.

It doesn’t have to be complicated—just make sure you have enough meals planned to get you to the next shopping window.

Frozen foods can help here too. Frozen vegetables and fruit are convenient, nutritious, and easy to keep on hand.

Pro tip: Write your grocery list, then organize it by section of the store—produce, meat, dairy, etc. This small step can save you a surprising amount of time.

4. Reduce Drag

When life is busy and the weather is nice, simple meals are your best friend.

Meals that require a lot of preparation can sometimes push us toward less healthy options—like grabbing something quick from the drive-thru.

Instead, focus on foods that are quick and easy to prepare:

  • Sandwiches or wraps
  • Big salads
  • Raw veggies with protein
  • Lean meats you can quickly grill

If a healthy meal is just a few minutes away, you’re far more likely to make it.

5. Enjoy Treats on a Schedule

Treats are part of life—and they should be enjoyed.

But if you’re working toward a goal, it helps to be intentional about them.

Instead of keeping lots of sweets or snack foods around and grabbing them without thinking, decide ahead of time when you’ll enjoy them.

Plan them into your week and enjoy them guilt-free. Then return to your normal routine until the next planned treat.

A little planning makes treats feel more satisfying while still supporting your goals.
