If you’ve never worked with a personal trainer before, your first session might feel a little intimidating. Maybe you’re wondering if you’ll be sore for days, if you’ll be judged for not knowing what to do, or if it’s going to be like a bootcamp drill scene from a movie.

Take a deep breath—we promise, it’s not like that.

🤝 Before Your First Session: We Start with a Conversation

Before we ever ask you to pick up a weight, we sit down with you in a relaxed, judgment-free setting. We call this your No Sweat Intro, and it’s all about getting to know you.

We’ll ask:

  • What has you interested in starting a routine with us?
  • How long have you had this interested?
  • What roadblocks have you run into in the past?
  • What have you loved about previous exercise routines that you have tried?
  • Do you have any previous injuries or conditions (like arthritis, osteoporosis, etc.)?
  • What are your goals?
  • What is your why?

No sales pitch. No pressure. Just a simple, open conversation to help us understand how we can support you. If we are the right place to help you, we will build a plan together that fits your needs! If we aren’t the right place for you, we will find the place that is!

👟 What to Wear and Bring

You don’t need fancy workout clothes or gear. Just wear:

  • Comfortable, breathable clothes you raise your arms overhead with and sit down in.
  • The most supportive and flat shoes you own! Converse and Vans work great! Running shoes are okay too!
  • A water bottle (We have a refill station, help the planet out by bringing your own bottle).

We’ll take care of the rest.

🔍 A Movement Assessment (Don’t Worry—No One’s Judging You)

In your first session, we may walk you through a few basic movements to see how your body moves. This helps us design a plan that’s safe and effective for you.

Things we might look at:

  • How you squat (even just to a chair)
  • How you lift your arms overhead
  • Your balance and core control
  • Any movement restrictions or pain points
  • How you row

We’ll never push you past what feels safe or comfortable. This isn’t about testing you—it’s about learning what you need.

Once we understand where you’re starting from, we begin building a strong foundation. This usually means:

  • Learning proper technique with very light weights (or just bodyweight)
    • We often go over the Barbell Back Squat, Rowing, Push-Ups, and Pull-Ups
  • Focusing on joint-friendly movements that strengthen and protect your body
  • Working on breathing, posture, and coordination

You don’t need to be in shape to start. You don’t even need to know what a barbell is. You just need to show up.
